Phlebotomy Training

The job of a phlebotomist is to collect samples of blood – they work in clinics, hospitals and other medical facilities, and they are at risk to a variety of diseases as they come in direct contact with blood. This is why phlebotomy training is vital as it teaches students the basics of laboratory safety and precautions, it helps them achieve manual dexterity and communication skills and it also teaches patients how to work well under pressure.

Certification is essential for those who want to become certified phlebotomy technicians, and a professional training program can ensure a bright future and a lucrative career in this branch of medicine. The average yearly salary of a phlebotomist varies based on several factors, and one of the most important ones is education – a certified phlebotomy technician earns around $30,000 a year.

The phlebotomy training programs will teach students the following:

• The role of phlebotomy in the medical field;
• Codes of practice and their importance;
• The different methods of collecting blood;
• Health and safety aspects associated with phlebotomy.

Phlebotomy Training Classes

Generally speaking, the phlebotomy training is held in special institutes where students are taught everything they need to know, from how to take blood sampled to how to conduct venipuncture. The phlebotomy classes available at the moment divide into two major groups, according to the education level of the student:

Certificate And Diploma Programs

These programs are by far the most common choice for students, and they last anywhere between 16 and 52 weeks – phlebotomy certification programs help students develop the necessary aptitudes and skills for performing venipuncture tasks in clinical settings. At the end of the training program, the student will receive a certificate that will allow them to get an entry-level job at most hospitals and clinics in the United States.

Associate’s Degree Programs

The associate’s degree programs are slightly more complex compared to certificate and diploma programs, as they usually require no less than two years of study – moreover, they combine the basics of venipuncture with other medical sciences, and the students will get a wide range of aptitudes that will benefit them in the long run. The main benefits of associate’s degree programs is that they boost the employment opportunities, they increase the earning potential and they offer the phlebotomy technician the chance to advance to a higher position easy and without the hassles.

Generally speaking, phlebotomy classes are health in a wide range of institutions, and some of the most common ones include vocational schools, community colleges as well as technical colleges. The location or the title of the institution is not as important as accreditation – accreditation is vital, as some clinical settings may not recognize your degree if you graduated a program that is not accredited by the accrediting bodies in charge. On the other hand, students can opt for online certification programs as well, as these programs offer them the flexibility they need.
